Redmann backstops Team USA to semifinal victory

KARLSTAD, Sweden -- Shawn Gawrys (St. Louis) scored three times, Pat Maroon (St. Louis) collected two goals and two assists and goaltender Troy Redman (Brea) stopped 17 of 20 shots as the U.S. InLine National Team defeated  Canada, 12-3, Saturday night in the semifinals of the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation InLine Hockey World Championship. Team USA will face the Czech Republic in the gold-medal game Sunday.

"We were moving and using our speed, and the score sheet showed that," said U.S. coach Rob Chornomud. "With each game, we gain more chemistry and that's what we're building on. We worked to get into this game, so tomorrow will be a big day for us.”

Just 3:11 into the first period, the U.S. took a 1-0 lead when Gawrys released a shot from the right point and Maroon picked up the rebound for a power-play tally. Gawrys then increased Team USA's lead to 2-0 at the 6:17 mark. Two minutes later, with the U.S. on the penalty kill, Nathan Sigmund (San Diego) beat Canadian goaltender Brett Leggat high on the glove side for a shorthanded goal at 8:18 to make it 3-0.

Only one minute into the second stanza, Maroon notched his second goal of the game on the power play to put Team USA ahead, 4-0. Kyle Kraemer (St. Louis) added a goal at the 7:07 mark to send the U.S. into halftime with a 5-0 lead.

Two early third period goals by Gerry Osterkamp (Covina) and Stephen Campbell (Corona) gave the U.S. a 7-0 cushion. Canada reduced the lead to 7-1 at 4:12 of the period, but Team USA answered back just 29 seconds later when Gawrys scored two goals within 10 seconds to put the U.S. ahead, 9-1. Kraemer's second goal at the 8:03 mark pushed the U.S. lead to nine goals before Canada connected to make the score 10-2 after three periods.

Canada scored again midway through the final stanza, but Juaquin Chavira (Upland) and Pat Lee (Shaumberg, Ill.) each found the back of the net to close out the scoring.

Canadian goaltenders Leggat and Taylor Pears combined to stop 27 shots in the loss.
