Los Angeles' Stafford signs with Coyotes
Defenseman Garrett Stafford (Los Angeles), a seven-year veteran of the AHL, has signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes.
The 6-foot, 195-pound Stafford, 30, helped the Texas Stars reach the Calder Cup Finals with 10 points (4 goals-6 assists) in 21 playoff games after posting 32 points (7-25) in 60 games.
Stafford, who has played five NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars, finished seventh in the AHL in defensemen scoring in 2008-09 with 45 points (11-34). He scored his first NHL point on an assist in a game against the Kings at Staples Center.
In 497 career AHL games, Stafford has collected 69-202-271 while playing for Texas, Grand Rapids, Worcester and Cleveland and has topped the 40-point mark in four of his seven seasons.
He played collegiately at New Hampshire, where he scored 81 points in 134 games.
