Sharks re-sign D Leach
SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced Wednesday that the club re-signed Group III un-restricted free agent defenseman Jay Leach to a one-year, two-way contract. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Last season, Leach posted career-highs in games played (35), goals, points (one goal, one assist), penalty minutes (25) and plus/minus (+3). He scored his first career goal on March 11 vs. Nashville.
Claimed off waivers by San Jose from Montreal on Dec. 1, Leach appeared in seven games with the Canadiens, posting five penalty minutes.
In 63 NHL games with Boston, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, Montreal and San Jose, Leach has three points (one goal, two assists) and 52 penalty minutes.
The 6-foot-5, 225-pound native of Syracuse, New York has also played in 341 American Hockey League games with Springfield, Providence, Bridgeport, Norfolk, Portland and Lowell.
He was originally selected by the Phoenix Coyotes in the fifth round (115th overall) in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
